About the role

Your primary goal will be to support and deliver culturally appropriate engagement practice within all Children, Youth and Families programs across the region. You will be responsible for identifying, maintaining and supporting local relationships and partnerships with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people including children, young people and families, communities, elders and organisations. Your days will be diverse and challenging but your key everyday tasks will include:

  • Project managing the development and implementation of a regional community engagement action plan, incorporating community leaders and the service sector to support and connect Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children, young people and families;
  • Providing local level advice and consultancy on cultural matters including Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander protocols, history and contemporary issues relevant to the communities;
  • Contributing to the provision of culturally sensitive services and a culturally safe working environment through consultation and engagement with local Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples, employees and organisations;

About you

This is an identified position within Churches of Christ in Queensland. To perform this role it is essential that the person who holds the position be an Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander person.

You have cultural capability and knowledge that inspires teams to achieve shared goals and work towards positive outcomes for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people. With well-developed communication skills you liaise comfortably with a range of internal and external stakeholders.

To be suitable for this position, your qualifications for the role will consist of:

  • Qualification in child and family welfare, or a behaviour science and/or relevant experience;
  • Demonstrated knowledge and understanding of the historical and contemporary issues affecting Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people;
  • Proven ability to effectively and sensitively engage with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people, coupled with a strong understanding of cultural and societal issues that impact upon them;

We provide a range of services to children, youth and families ranging from foster and kinship care to residential and supported independent living services. We provide support for more than 2,800 children, young people and families each year. Over 800 dedicated foster and kinship carers help us provide a vital safety net for these young people.
